Free Online Fiction at Muy Mal

January 03, 2006 By Johnathon Williams

MuymalMichael Oliveri, John Urbancik, and Weston Ochse have created a shared online world where each writer will contribute updates to an ongoing story. Muy Mal is described as a "world very much like our own, similar in time and place, but just about thirty degrees off of reality. This is a world in which magic never ceased to exist, where evil waits around every corner and where creatures walk side-by-side with everyday folk." It's divided into three distinct story lines — one for each writer — but some crossovers are expected.

For tech-savy readers, the site offers many goodies, including RSS feeds and reader comments for each story line. It's set up like a blog (using the WordPress blog engine) and is published under a Creative Commons license.

Given that online fiction has been abandoned by most writers and publishers, it's nice to see writers of this caliber taking a chance on something like this. Serial stories and blog technology would seem made for each other. Let's hope it pans out.
