About Horror Reader
Horror Reader is a collaborative weblog devoted to horror fiction. Launched in August of 2005, it aims to combine the immediacy of the blog format with original reporting, reviews, and interviews. The content, we hope, will present the best of both new and old media. For more information, email us at horrorreader2@gmail.com.
Staff and Contributors:
Founder: Johnathon Williams
Johnathon cut his teeth as a newspaper reporter before becoming a full-time freelance writer in 2003. His journalism, tech writing, and other nonfiction have appeared in magazines such as MacAddict and Hearing Health and in newspapers such as the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the Southwest Times Record, and the Morning News of Northwest Arkansas. He got the idea to start Horror Reader late one night when he should have been sleeping, and he's regretted it ever since. He edited and published Horror Reader until July of 2006, when the site was turned over to Daniel Robichaud.
Editor: Daniel Robichaud
Daniel R. Robichaud lives and works in Worcester, Massachusetts, aka Lovecraft's Dunwich country. A Research Associate with the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Physiology Department, he struggles to balance a life of benefiting mankind with his need to tell crazy stories.
Assistant Editor: Lou Sytsma
Louis Sytsma - call him Lou - is old enough to have watched the original Star Trek in it first prime-time run as a wide-eyed young lad. All his life, adventures not possible in the real world have fascinated him. SF, horror and fantasy are his genres of choice, though as the Gunslinger observed in Stephen King's Dark Tower series, he believes more stories should cross genre boundaries instead of restricting themselves to one. A writer wannabe, he lives with his wife and five-year-old son near Toronto, Ontario. Life is good there.
Assistant Editor: Steve Vernon
Steve Vernon was born in the woods of Northern Ontario and raised by a family of beatnik wolves, who trained him to howl and bongo at an early age. He's been writing horror fiction for the last twenty years. His work has appeared in The Horror Show, Cemetery Dance, Karl Edward Wagner's Year's Best Horror, Flesh & Blood, Horror Garage, Abyss, Apex, and many other mags and markets. He's a full-time fortune teller, part-time professional writer, and part-time oral tradition storyteller. For a starter course check out his novella Long Horn, Big Shaggy. You will never look at a severed head the same way again.
Assistant Editor: Mark Justice
Mark Justice lives with his wife and cats in Kentucky, where he hosts a morning radio program. In his rare free time he writes stories, which have appeared (or will soon appear) in Bare Bone, Damned Nation, Mythos Collector, In Laymon's Terms, Gothic.Net, Horror Carousel and Dark Krypt, among others. He also reviews fiction for Hellnotes and Page Horrific, and edits the Story Station children's fiction site at www.viatouch.com.
Assistant Editor: David T. Wilbanks
David T. Wilbanks writes, edits and makes mischief in Minnesota.
About Our Podcasts
Our podcast channel is the only one on the Web devoted to horror fiction and the people who produce it. The channel contains two distinct shows. Pod of Horror, hosted by Mark Justice and David Wilbanks, combines news, reviews, and quick interviews with Mark and David's signature wit. Voices of Horror, hosted by Johnathon Williams, devotes each episode to an extensive interview with a single author. The combination, we think, offers something for everyone and presents both the humorous and serious sides of the genre.
As of the spring of 2006, Voices of Horror is on hiatus, but Pod of Horror is still going strong. Email POH hosts Mark and David at PodofHorror@aol.com or ping them at their message board.
A podcast is nothing more than an audio show that is downloaded and played on a computer or iPod. The file sizes for our shows generally run between 12 and 20 megabyes, so they can take some time to download on slower connections.
How do I listen?
The best way to download and listen to our shows is with iTunes, a free program for both PC and Mac. iTunes can download new episodes automatically, and it makes it easy to organize and find past episodes. Click here to download it. Once you've installed iTunes, click here to see our podcast feed.
Alternatively, you may download individual shows directly from our web site. To do so, right-click the download link (Control-click for Mac users), and save the file to your Desktop. Then, you may listen to the files with any program that supports MP3 playback. You can find a complete list of all shows and download links on our podcast page.
FAQ
Can I suggest a site for you to link to?
Absolutely. Send your suggestion to horrorreader2@gmail.com.
How do you choose the books that you review?
Generally, books are chosen based on the interests and reading habits of our reviewers. Because our budget is small, the availability of review copies is also a factor.
Can I submit a book for review?
Certainly. But first, take a look at our review guidelines.
How do you select the authors and publishers whom you interview?
We try to make interviews somewhat timely (interviewing authors when they have a new book out, for instance), but happenstance also plays a role, not to mention the willingness of the subject. If someone working in the horror genre is interested in talking with us, we're probably interested in talking to him.
Can I buy an ad to promote my book/publishing company/movie/etc?
Sure. Check out our advertising page for sizes and prices.
